The Inn

The one-stoplight town of Olema wasn't always quiet. In the 1880s, the property was in the thick of a bustling crossroads, complete with taverns, brothels and bar room gambling. Built in 1876, the property was obtained by a family named Garcia through a Mexican land grant and housed a saloon. But creditors soon descended upon the Garcias and they sold the property to a Swedish man named John Nelson. Nelson had a stagecoach that ran regularly to San Rafael—keeping Olema in touch with the outside world. He added rooms and named the establishment The Olema Hotel; locals simply called it "Nelsons."

On the corner of Sir Francis Drake Blvd. and Hwy 1, the hotel did a lively business, offering overnight stays, among other services, to weary travelers. Today Olema is much quieter but the inn is still a wonderful destination offering access to the beautiful coastal scenery of the Point Reyes National Seashore. The inn's six rooms are warm, elegant and beautifully appointed with antiques and luxurious bedding.
